You always start with Uchi and Jock villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, list of starting villagers
Your very first two starting villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are always taken from a smaller pool of possible villagers than you’d think, according to our analysis of information released so far!
Every single time that a pair of two starting villagers have been seen in New Horizons so far, there’s always been one male Jock villager and one female Uchi villager. And with more than 15 different occurrences so far, there doesn’t appear to have been any exceptions to this rule.
Based on the high amount of instances seen so far, including in new tweets from the official Animal Crossing Twitter accounts, we are willing to say with confidence that you will always start with an Uchi villager and a Jock villager in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Here’s a complete list below to our knowledge of every time early villagers have been seen or reported in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, who the villagers were, and what personality they were! (Updated March 4th, 2020)

The only possible curve-balls to this theory so far are the new unnamed sheep villager and the new horse villager Reneigh, which don’t have any confirmed personalities yet so far.
However, in both instances, the second villager accompanying them is either a Jock or Uchi villager, so it seems very plausible that the sheep is a Jock and Reneigh is an Uchi.
This entire aspect to the game’s first villagers might seem a little strange at first, but it wouldn’t exactly be unprecedented for the Animal Crossing series either as Animal Crossing: New Leaf had its own rules for the personalities of your starting villagers.
To be more precise, it was impossible to get an Uchi or Smug personality type villager in your initial five! And the game would always give you no more than one of each personality type for your starting set.
If you think about it, this could make a lot of sense for game setting purposes too. It’s kind of hard to imagine a snooty or lazy villager for example getting along well in a tent on a deserted island without any luxuries or shops built up yet! So this might be a reason behind the decision to restrict the initial villagers.
In our original version of this article, we still noted the possibility that this could be some crazy coincidence or demo build quirk, but I’m confident we have seen enough examples now including from the official Animal Crossing Twitter accounts which are certainly not using demo builds.
Even if you’re not super happy about this news, it’s good information to know in case you’re planning to reset repeatedly for a specific villager when you get your hands on the game next month! It would be pretty disappointing to reset for hours before realizing it’s literally impossible to get your preferred villager.
For your convenience, we’ve compiled a table below that lists every possible Uchi and Jock villager from Animal Crossing: New Leaf to give you an idea of who you can start hoping will arrive on your deserted island with you on March 20th. Enjoy!
