Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Gets Nintendo Direct Showcase This Week

3 weeks ago 1 Comment

A full extended reveal of Tomodachi Life’s long awaited sequel is coming later this week in a new Nintendo Direct!

Previously announced in two Nintendo Directs during 2025, this beloved life sim that uses Nintendo’s classic Mii characters and hilariously robotic text-to-speech voices is set to return this Spring in a new sequel called Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Tomodachi Life is a life simulator of sorts where you can create and customize dozens of Mii characters to live their lives on an island, then watch their lives play out as they interact with each other, sometimes with clever interventions on your part. Plus, the new sequel will explore their dreams for the first time!

Here’s how Nintendo described the game in its most recent update last year:

On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives. You’re in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself! Then, choose their personality and voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.

The Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Nintendo Direct will be approximately 20 minutes long and broadcast on Thursday, January 29th at 6AM PST / 9AM EST on Nintendo’s YouTube channel.

To be clear, Tomodachi Life certainly isn’t an Animal Crossing replacement by any means, but we saw a lot of interest from Animal Crossing: New Leaf fans back when these games both released around 2013-2014. A potentially better comparison might be The Sims series, but Tomodachi Life tends to be much more passive with less direct control. Or at least the original was — we’ll have to see in the Nintendo Direct what this sequel has to offer!

For a fun peek at what Tomodachi Life is like, you’ve got to check out the classic 2014 Nintendo Direct advertising the game. It even features multiple high level Nintendo employees from that era as in-game characters, which is pretty fun:

We would love to see this Nintendo Direct format continue as a tradition with this week’s Living The Dream presentation, but that does feel like a long shot given how different Nintendo Directs tend to feel these days.

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream releases this Spring for original Nintendo Switch, and is of course backwards compatible on the Nintendo Switch 2 as well. We’ll have to wait and see if a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is coming or not in the Direct.
