Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Soars To New Heights Thanks To New Horizons Hype

Nintendo’s mobile take on Animal Crossing has been petering along without much success for a while, but unsurprisingly things have taken a sharp turn with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and all the hype coming with the new game!
According to new estimates coming from the mobile app tracking company Sensor Tower, a massive surge in downloads was seen for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp on both the iOS App Store and the Android Play Store throughout the past two months.
While downloads had been shifting between 300,000 to 600,000 during the months prior to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, they’ve soared to ridiculous levels not seen since the original launch of Pocket Camp back in 2017.
In fact, according to Sensor Tower’s data, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp saw 4.5 million downloads during March followed up by another 7 million downloads in April afterwards.
Unfortunately for Nintendo, the player spending estimates don’t quite align with the downloads, likely because many of these new users were purely motivated by the fun Pocket Camp collaboration items. If they choose to immediately delete the app afterwards, then that won’t help much with revenue.
That said, we can see a 3 million dollar increase in revenue for Pocket Camp in April over the pre-New Horizons sales of February, so some of these brand new users are still converting, even if that number is few. The real test for Nintendo will be whether they continue to stick around and play, or ditch when the New Horizons hype is over.
One more interesting tidbit from Sensor Tower’s report is that Japanese players continue to dominate in-app spending as the most lucrative audience with almost 75% of revenue coming from Japan. That’s a stark contrast to only about 19% of spending from the United States.
For whatever reason, Pocket Camp continues to be quite unpopular outside of Japan despite how large the Animal Crossing series has grown worldwide. Nintendo will have to figure out why and how to address this issue if they ever want to see the game grow to its full potential.
