In the past couple days, fans have unfortunately begun to encounter a pretty severe glitch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons involving the flying Balloon Presents that appear over your island.
According to an extensive post covering the issue on Reddit, the “It’s Raining Treasure” Nook Miles achievement has a bug associated with it where Balloons will entirely cease to appear and fly across your island when the 300 Balloons Shot milestone has been reached.
UPDATE 04/03: The latest Version 1.1.3 update of Animal Crossing: New Horizons released has fixed the Balloon Present glitch! Original article follows…
Multiple players have confirmed that refusing to ‘accept’ the “It’s Raining Treasure” Nook Miles achievement by not claiming the rewards doesn’t seem to change anything and balloons will not spawn regardless. (image credit: stellery)
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem that this balloon glitch was resolved in the latest Version 1.1.2 update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons released last night. So we’ll likely have to still wait at least a couple days longer before Nintendo gets a fix released in the next update.
What’s even worse is that this glitch has an impact on the current Bunny Day event too as Sky Eggs can only be obtained from shooting down Egg Balloons. Furthermore, balloon presents are one of the primary ways to find new Bunny Day DIY crafting recipes.
In the meantime, if you run into this glitch yourself, there is one workaround that you can use even if it’s definitely not an ideal solution. Since the issue is tied to your Nook Miles which are independent for each player, the bug only effects the player who reached 300 balloons.
Therefore, it’s possible to create a new player character on your island by using a separate Nintendo Switch profile and balloons will continue to appear while playing on that character. Some have also said the glitch doesn’t effect any secondary players at all, even when they reach 300 balloons.
Once you have your secondary character created and a part of your island, you can use the ‘Call Resident’ feature in your NookPhone to enable local co-op multiplayer. Then you can just shoot down balloons with the new character and pick up the rewards using your main character.
Alternatively, you can just play single-player on the secondary character and leave the items on the ground for your main player to pick up later. Importantly, new DIY Crafting recipes can be traded and learnt using these methods.
Again, this is certainly not an ideal solution at all and Nintendo needs to release a proper fix as soon as possible! But it’s at least possible to still obtain the items and recipes that Balloon Presents drop in some manner while we wait for an update to arrive.
