Tomodachi Life Finally Returns A Decade Later On Nintendo Switch Next Year!

4 weeks ago 1 Comment

Woah, we didn’t see this one coming — the cult favourite simulator Tomodachi Life released on Nintendo 3DS back in 2014 is finally getting a long awaited sequel!

Announced in today’s March 2025 Nintendo Direct presentation, this beloved life sim using Nintendo’s classic Mii characters with humorous robotic text to speech voices is returning with the new game Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream once again set on an island.

It’s a bit of a tough game to explain, but essentially you create and customize your own Mii characters to live their own life on your island, and watch the shenanigans play out between them while stepping in from time to time to help resolve the issues they encounter.

Although this is certainly not an Animal Crossing game by any imagination, there was some significant crossover in appeal between Animal Crossing: New Leaf players and Tomodachi Life when the original released in 2014. There’s some similarities to The Sims too, but it’s much more of a passive nature rather than direct control over the every move of characters.

As for what’s new in this edition of the series, details are pretty light, but both the title and press release hints that we’ll be able to participate in our Mii’s dreams now:

The Tomodachi Life series is back with its first brand new entry in over ten years. Create your own Mii characters based on yourself, friends, family – anyone! – and watch them live their lives on an island out at sea. Get involved with their relationships and experience all the weird and wonderful ways these Mii characters interact. You may even drop in on their dreams! Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches on Nintendo Switch in 2026.

To get a peek at what Tomodachi Life is like, or a throwback for the old fans, be sure to watch this classic Nintendo Direct advertising the game — it features multiple Nintendo employees as in-game characters and is quite a contrast from what we see today:

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait a little while longer as 2026 is the release window provided, but it’s great to hear this series is making a grand return at last. Even just in the past few years, I’ve noticed an uptick in online fandom around the game, and it would seem Nintendo might have too!

Stay tuned as well for potential Animal Crossing announcements starting next week with the full reveal of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 and associated games coming on April 2nd in a new Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation.
