What Happens If You Get Animal Crossing: Happy Home Paradise With Switch Online And Cancel Later

3 years ago 13 Comments

The upcoming Happy Home Paradise expansion for Animal Crossing is set to be included in Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriptions, but what happens if you cancel later?

This new Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise is a paid DLC granting access to a significant set of new features revolving around designing vacation homes and facilities like schools for your favorite villagers.

There’s two different ways that you can get your hands on the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise expansion DLC:

  • Purchase Happy Home Paradise standalone for $24.99 USD through the Nintendo eShop to own it permanently.
  • Subscribe to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service for $49.99 USD per year to receive access during your membership.

Picking up Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise through a standard Nintendo eShop purchase is pretty straight forward. You’ll get to enjoy all of the DLC’s features forever just as you’d expect.

But where matters get tricky is with the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. How does it work when you mingle a paid subscription service that has a duration, with an in-game expansion?

Some fans have wondered whether the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service will offer the Animal Crossing expansion to keep as part of the promotion, or whether you’ll lose access after cancelling your membership.

Do You Keep Animal Crossing: Happy Home Paradise After Cancelling Nintendo Switch Online?

Thankfully, we have answers to these questions courtesy of an interview with Nintendo press relations from Eurogamer!

First, to state what’s likely obvious, you will in fact lose access to visiting what Nintendo calls the ‘archipelago’ if your subscription ends — also known as the Resort area where Paradise Planning with villagers takes place in the Happy Home Paradise expansion.

To visit the archipelago area after losing access to the DLC, you’ll need to either purchase the expansion standalone for $24.99 USD or renew your membership to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

However, it will not be possible to visit the archipelago if players lose access to the DLC. To be able to visit the archipelago and take on requests of designing vacation homes again, you will need to purchase the DLC separately or renew the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.

Can You Keep Happy Home Paradise’s Design Features After Cancelling?

Apart from getting to participate in Paradise Planning, the other major perk of Animal Crossing: Happy Home Paradise is unlocking the expansion’s fancy new interior design features for use on your own island at home.

Those intriguing new decoration features include placing Partition Walls, Counters, and Pillars in your rooms. You can also enjoy advanced Lighting customization, play special Soundscapes to fit the scene, and polish furniture items for fun effects.

So what happens to all of those lovely new design features if you end your subscription to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, after already unlocking them for use on your personal island?

There’s a good silver lining here — Nintendo confirmed to Eurogamer that Animal Crossing: New Horizons players can continue to enjoy these features on their main island, even after losing access to the Happy Home Paradise DLC!

Players can still continue to access certain things they have unlocked in Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise on their main island, including adding counters, partition walls, as well as adding ambient lighting and soundscapes, even if their access to Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise is suspended.

Summary

So, in conclusion, here’s the state of affairs when it comes to accessing Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise through Nintendo Switch Online…

If you cancel your Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership or otherwise lose access to the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise expansion, you’ll lose access to visiting the Archipelago area where Paradise Planning content can be enjoyed, but you’ll get to keep access to any design features unlocked that can be used on your personal island.

Losing out on access to a chunk of content after cancelling a subscription certainly isn’t ideal, but we are glad that Nintendo isn’t taking the extra step of locking access to those design features unlocked on your main island too.
