Amiibo Poster Catalog Bug Fixed In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nintendo Confirms

A bug concerning the cataloging and ordering of Amiibo Character Posters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons was fixed in the latest update, and Nintendo has even released a statement!

For those who aren’t familiar, an expansive set of special poster furniture items are in Animal Crossing: New Horizons featuring nearly every villager and special character in the game — and even some that aren’t yet.

These poster items are intended to be unlocked and purchased exclusively by scanning in a corresponding Animal Crossing Amiibo Card, which adds the matching poster to your Nook Shopping’s Special Goods section for order.

Since the game’s release though, it’s also been possible to catalog (picking up the item from another player online) the posters and re-order them yourself from Nook Shopping — even without actually owning or scanning the matching amiibo yourself!

We actually covered this as a ‘trick’ right here on Animal Crossing World back in April to let players know they could use it to obtain Amiibo Posters in Animal Crossing: New Horizons much easier.

However, we also discussed at the time about how there was a good chance the trick could be an unintentional bug. That’s because the cataloged posters wouldn’t naturally appear in any of the Nook Shopping Catalog’s categories or the Special Goods section.

Rather, the posters could only be found when using the search function, leading to our theory that this was a mistake by Nintendo. Not to mention, it clearly devalues any Amiibo exclusivity.

Of course, many months have passed by since April with no changes or fixes, so ourselves and the community began to assume it was intentional after all for some reason.

That finally changed in the most recent Version 1.5 Fall Halloween Update as players discovered in the past few days that their catalogued Amiibo Posters could no longer be found by searching in Nook Shopping.

In fact, Nintendo went as far as to release an official Twitter statement on the manner in Japanese today clarifying that this was indeed a bug and intentionally fixed:

In addition, we have received many inquiries that “you can no longer order posters of animals that you have obtained once at Tanuki Shopping”, but here we ordered posters other than animals that you have invited to the shooting studio. This is due to the correction of the problems that can be made, and the operation is normal.

Additionally, the official Japanese Patch Notes for Version 1.5 have been updated to list this as a bug fix:

(Added on October 2, 2020) Fixed a bug in Tanuki Shopping where you could order posters other than animals that you had invited to the shooting studio.

We hope you’ll excuse the rough machine translations from Japanese to English in these quotes, but the intent should be quite clear.

However, the timing here is certainly suspect to some fans with the announcement last week Nintendo plans to re-stock the main four series of Animal Crossing Amiibo Cards in November.

It’s likely that Nintendo had been aware of the bug for sometime, but remained sitting on the backburner as other priorities took place first and was simply moved up in priority with the upcoming amiibo card restocks.

Still — it’s understandable that some fans might feel a bit peeved by the entire situation, especially considering this bug remained in the game for such an extended period of time without being addressed.

Let us know your thoughts on the situation in the comments below. Were you aware that this was a bug, or were you surprised to see the option removed? Was Nintendo right to make the change?
