5 New Additions In Animal Crossing: New Horizons Winter Update Missing From The Trailer

4 years ago 10 Comments

The announcement trailer for Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ major Winter Update released this morning with plenty of new features to see, but it doesn’t tell the full story!

As usual in what has become a bit of a tradition, there are a variety of additional new smaller features and additions revealed in the press release and Japanese website that weren’t included in the main trailer.

So in this article, we’ll be going over all of these extra bonus treats found in the Winter Update releasing on November 19th that you wouldn’t know about from just watching Nintendo’s announcement video!

Visit Random Dream Islands With Luna

One of the best new features added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in an update so far has been the ability to hop in a bed and visit Dream Islands with Luna.

When this feature was first added back in August though, there was one glaring omission, especially compared to Animal Crossing: New Leaf. That’s the lack of options for visiting different Dream Islands, besides looking up codes online.

Great news though — the Winter Update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be adding the ability to visit random Dream Islands when you speak to Luna, according to the Japanese website! This means you’ll be able to receive random visitors on your uploaded Dream Island too, even if you don’t share your code everywhere.

We don’t have much more information than this, and the feature may just be as simple as that. But we’d love if there were some basic filter options to use as well, like specifying the season of the random island.

New Catalog In The Nook Link Smartphone App

Coming in Late November shortly after the Winter Update, an exciting and unexpected new addition will be coming to the Nook Link smartphone app!

Once the Nook Link feature inside the Nintendo Switch Online app is updated, you’ll be able to browse and search your in-game Animal Crossing: New Horizons item catalog right on your phone.

Now you’ll be able to see what items you have from anywhere, even if your Nintendo Switch isn’t with you. From the screenshots shown so far, it appears this mobile catalog will include the buying and selling prices for each item as well!

This catalog is honestly quite a surprising addition that we never could have predicted coming, but it could be quite cool! We’re excited to get our hands on it and see exactly how it works soon.

Like all of the other Nook Link features, an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription is unfortunately required to enjoy the new Catalog option.

Free Yule Log Item After Updating

Every major Animal Crossing: New Horizons update released so far has come with a fun free gift in our mailbox afterwards, and the Winter Update will be no exception!

When loading up your island after installing the latest Version 1.6.0 update, you can find the special Yule Log furniture item in your hands for the holidays. Check it out above!

December Seasonal Nook Shopping Items

Beginning on December 1st after the Winter Update is released, two brand new Animal Crossing: New Horizons seasonal items will be come available through the Nook Shopping menu!

In the Northern Hemisphere, a gorgeous new Aurora Wall will become for sale, alongside a return of the Winter-Solstice Sweater clothing we saw earlier this year.

For the Southern Hemisphere, they’ll be getting a cute new Sunflower Rug for the summer, plus a returning Summer-Solstice Crown from earlier in the year.

While Nintendo is advertising these items as specifically for each Hemisphere to match their current seasons, the ones previously released were actually both available to players at the same time regardless of island hemisphere.

It’s not clear whether this will be the case again, or if these new Aurora Wall and Sunflower Rug items will be properly locked to each season this time around. We’ll just have to wait and see!

New Year’s Nook Shopping Seasonal Items

The new seasonal items from Nook Shopping don’t stop there though as another additional set will be released for New Year’s.

From December 26th to 31st, four new food items will become available for purchase at Nook Shopping to celebrate the brand new year and give you refreshments to enjoy during New Year’s Eve!

These are the four New Year’s items set to be introduced in the Winter Update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons…

  • Sparkling Cider
  • Twelve Grapes
  • Berliner Pfannkuchen
  • Toshikoshi Soba Noodles

Note that these details were only reported on the Japanese website, so the names may be slightly off from the final localizations.

Pocket Camp Collaboration Item

Celebrating three full years since Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp first launched in November 2017, there will be a fresh new collaboration item in the Winter Update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons!

Simply download Pocket Camp on your smartphone device, link/login to My Nintendo, and purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Special Order Ticket to receive a special NookPhone design resembling the phone from Pocket Camp!

Previously, you could unlock various camping themed items and more from Pocket Camp by performing the same procedure. It seems possible that this new NookPhone design will be available automatically for those who already obtained the previous items, but we’ll have to see.

That covers all of the smaller new additions in the Winter Update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons that were missing from today’s update trailer from Nintendo!
