Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) Guides

Mushroom DIY Crafting Recipes & How To Get Them

Mushrooms are a special autumn seasonal crafting material in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH)! Learn how to get Mushrooms and all of the Mush Set items you can craft with them in this guide.

How to Get Mushrooms

To get Mushrooms in Animal Crossing: New Horizons naturally, you’ll need to be playing during the month of May in the Southern Hemisphere or the month of November in the Northern Hemisphere. There are no specific dates beyond that as you can find Mushrooms throughout the entire month. However, Maple Leaves are available during a specific period towards the end of the month.

There are five different types of Mushroom items to hunt down during the month and they are found in different locations depending on the type — here’s a complete a list below including sell prices:

  • Flat Mushroom (Sell Price: 200 Bells)
  • Rare Mushroom (Sell Price: 16,000 Bells)
  • Round Mushroom (Sell Price: 200 Bells)
  • Skinny Mushroom (Sell Price: 300 Bells)
  • Elegant Mushroom (Sell Price: 10,000 Bells)

Where To Find Thin, Round, Flat, Elegant Mushrooms

You can find Thin, Round, Flat, and Elegant Mushrooms randomly spawned on the ground during the season near both regular trees and cedar trees. Each day at 5AM local time on your island, a fresh new batch should appear around your trees.

The rarest and most valuable of these is the Elegant Mushroom selling for 10,000 Bells each, which is used in the Forest Wall and Mush Wall crafting recipes.

Where To Find Rare Mushrooms

Unlike the other types of Mushrooms that can be found plainly visible on the ground near your trees, the Rare Mushrooms are hidden out of sight. You can find them buried in the ground around trees marked by X star spots, just like Fossils! If you spot one, simply take out your Shovel and dig it up.

We’ve heard from some players that having a 5 Star Island rating with Isabelle at Resident Services may increase your chances of finding Rare Mushrooms on your island. That being said, they can definitely be found on islands less than 5 Stars too.

To be honest, Rare Mushrooms aren’t particularly important anyway for crafting items. There’s only a single DIY Crafting Recipe (Forest Flooring) that uses them and only one Rare Mushroom is required to craft the item. That being said, they do sell for a generous 16,000 Bells each.

How to Get Mushrooms Outside November / May

While Mushrooms only appear naturally on the ground or buried underground during May in Southern Hemisphere and November in Northern Hemisphere, you can visit other players islands that have Mushrooms if your own island is not in season.

For example, if you’re playing in the Northern Hemisphere when it is late Spring in May, you may be able to get Mushrooms from a friend playing in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Mushroom crafting materials can also be kept in your house storage or other places just like any other item, so you may be able to trade with players online outside of the season who have stockpiled the resource.

Finally, it’s always possible to time travel to a date where the crafting material is in season if you have explored all other options. You’ll want to time travel to the following dates to find Mushrooms:

  • November 1st to 30th in the Northern Hemisphere
  • May 1st to 31st in the Southern Hemisphere

How to Get & Learn Mushroom DIY Recipes

During the Mushroom season, all Balloon Presents flying in the sky over your island have a chance of dropping a Mushroom DIY Crafting recipe! Unfortunately, there’s no concrete way to control exactly what you’ll get, so just keep shooting them down until you get lucky.

Duplicate Mushroom DIY Crafting items are easily possible too and should be expected, so we recommend trying to make trades with friends to complete the collection faster. You may be able to sell any duplicates for a hefty amount online too, especially to players in the opposite Hemisphere as you.

We do have some tips for how you can most effectively hunt and farm balloon presents though! First of all, watch for the balloon traveling direction — they will always fly across your island in a single direction during the morning and afternoon. Then later in the day around 6PM, the direction of wind will reverse!

Whichever end of your island the balloons are travelling from, we recommend hanging out on that beach side to regularly walk up and down the shore looking for them as they first reach the island. Pass the time by collecting some Manila Clams or trying your hand at fishing too!

Secondly, flying balloon presents always have a chance of spawning on an every 5 minute cycle beginning at 4 minutes past the hour. That means you can expect possible balloon spawns at 1:04, 1:09, 1:14, 1:19, and so on. Keep in mind these are possible appearances though — they won’t always show up every time and a spawn time could pass by multiple times before actually happening.

Unlike most other seasonal item series in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, we haven’t experienced Isabelle giving a Mushroom DIY Crafting recipe in her morning announcements during the season. If you have seen this happen though, please let us know in the comments below, including which recipe she gave you.
