Flower Fest: The Lost Event From Animal Crossing Wild World Explained
It’s the Flower Fest event this week everyone! Well, it isn’t in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but it would be if you were playing the classic Animal Crossing: Wild World on Nintendo DS still!
We thought it’d be fun to take a look back at this long lost event from Animal Crossing: Wild World released in 2005 as it’s quite unique compared to most other events in Animal Crossing games today.
Taking place during the second of week of April every year, and from April 5th to 11th in 2021, the Flower Fest was a competition style event allowing players to compete against their fellow villagers for the best garden.
Each day of the week, town mayor Tortimer could be found outside Town Hall offering a free bag of flower seeds to plant in your garden, plus some words of encouragement for the flower competition. (image sources: JVGS Jeff)
Throughout the week, the villagers of your town would encourage you to plant flowers outside the area of your house, while they do the same building up their own gardens to compete in the Flower Fest competition with you and other villagers.
As the days go on, you’d notice more and more flowers appear around villager homes, as you hopefully do the same ensuring they remain watered to become the winner at the end of the week.
After the week ended, the Flower Fest winner was judged by Tortimer with their great victory announced on the town’s Bulletin Board. But that’s not all — what made Flower Fest more interesting than most Animal Crossing events is that a special Flower Trophy item was mailed to the winner, much like the Fishing Tourney and Bug-Off.
On the other hand, Flower Fest didn’t exactly have much real substance to it in terms of skill as it appears the winner was determined quite simply by the amount of nearby flowers around their house, regardless of arrangement.
Amusingly, one of the best strategies for winning Flower Fest was actually to simply steal flowers from the other villagers’ gardens, and place them in your own — removing points from your competition and helping yourself. Obviously, they can’t win without flowers!
It’s unclear whether this was an unintentional loophole, or perhaps a planned sneaky aspect of the event by Nintendo, but I’d like to think it might have been intended as that’d be pretty funny!
Despite these potential flaws though, an event like Flower Fest offered the feeling of community and that something is happening in the town, even if it’s not a major holiday. That’s sorely missing quite often with Animal Crossing: New Horizons in our opinion and some events like Flower Fest would be a great addition.
