Get An Eggplant Cow & Cucumber Horse This Week In Animal Crossing: New Horizons During Obon

Two very interesting new items celebrating a Japanese holiday are now available for order in Animal Crossing: New Horizons this week!

Celebrated in Japan starting on August 13th, the Obon Festival holiday marks the return of ancestors’ spirits into the living world to visit with their relatives.

In what likely comes off as quite strange to foreigners, some celebrate Obon in Japan by attaching chopsticks to eggplants or cucumbers as legs. These vegetables represent spirit animals that help ferry the ancestors’ spirits back home, with a Cucumber Horse bringing a loved one quickly, and an Eggplant Cow slowly taking them back.

To commemorate the holiday, two brand new seasonal items accordingly called the Eggplant Cow and Cucumber Horse are now available for players to collect.

Players can pick up the Eggplant Cow and Cucumber Horse items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons from the Special Goods section of Nook Shopping for 500 Bells each from August 10th to 16th, 2021.

Note that these items will alternate appearances in the Nook Shopping menu every day — meaning you’ll need to check in on two separate days to get both items, one at a time.

Here’s the official description from Nintendo for the Obon shopping event:

Celebrated mainly in Japan, it is said that ancestral spirits will visit the living beginning on August 13th, arriving on creatures made from cucumber and eggplant before departing once more on the 16th.

Following these two new items, many more brand new seasonal items are scheduled to arrive in Animal Crossing: New Horizons later this year throughout August, September, October, and November — find our complete Upcoming Seasonal Items guide here!
