Brand New Nintendo Direct Presentation Coming Tomorrow — Will We See Animal Crossing?

It’s time to set your alarms, because a brand new Nintendo Direct presentation has been announced by Nintendo for viewing tomorrow afternoon!
Scheduled for broadcast during this Wednesday, February 9th at 2PM Pacific Time / 5PM Eastern Time, this regular February Nintendo Direct will be approximately 40 minutes long and primarily feature information on upcoming Nintendo Switch games releasing during the first half of 2022.
For those who aren’t familiar by any chance, Nintendo Directs are a pre-recorded presentation that Nintendo releases ever so often packed full of announcements for upcoming games and additions to existing games on Nintendo Switch.
This presentation will be the first Nintendo Direct revealed of the year so far, with the most recent previous Direct taking place in September 2021 last year — plus the special Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct special in October.
Will We See Animal Crossing News In The Direct?
As always with an announcement of a new Nintendo Direct, Animal Crossing fans have to wonder whether we might be treated with any sort of news on Animal Crossing.
In recent memory, that typically involved hoping for some news on an upcoming content update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, such as when the February 2021 Direct featured a trailer for the Super Mario Update with collaboration furniture including Warp Pipes or the September 2021 Direct teased the long-awaited arrival of Brewster’s The Roost.
However, we’re obviously living in a different era right now in the lull between Animal Crossing games after Nintendo extensively made clear that the Version 2.0 Update was intended as the final major update or DLC for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Therefore, it is highly unlikely that we’ll see any such announcement for Animal Crossing: New Horizons during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct — but it’s always possible that a small update with further minor event items or a promotional crossover could show up.
With Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates mostly ruled out, the other type of announcement we could see is some sort of new upcoming spin-off game in the Animal Crossing series — like Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival in past times, given it’s likely way too early for a mainline game at this point.
For obvious reasons of time, even a spin-off announcement is extremely unlikely, but you never know sometimes when Nintendo might come out with a surprise curveball announcement. Animal Crossing is a bigger franchise than its ever been before, so development may have kicked off sooner than usual on such a project.
So in conclusion, we do think it’s pretty unlikely that Animal Crossing will make a showing during this February 2022 Nintendo Direct due to these factors, but you really can never know for sure with Nintendo.
Outside of the Animal Crossing realm, but still somewhat related, we do absolutely expect to see a significant amount of Splatoon 3 content during this Nintendo Direct. With a decent amount of Animal Crossing staff likely giving a hand to the Splatoon 3 project right now, that might be the most we get for some time.
