Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH) Guides

Winter Snowflake & Snowboy DIY Recipe List (Frozen / Ice Set) [2023]

Snowflakes are a special winter seasonal crafting material in Animal Crossing: New Horizons (ACNH)! Learn how to get both Snowflakes & Large Snowflakes, and see all of the winter themed frozen items you can craft with them in this guide.

How to Get Snowflakes

To get Snowflakes Snowflake in Animal Crossing: New Horizons naturally, you’ll need to be playing during December 11th to February 24th in the Northern Hemisphere or June 11th to August 24th in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time, you can also find Snowballs and build your very own Snowboy.

Northern Hemisphere players can collect and craft Christmas Ornament items too at the same time from December 15th to January 6th!

You can find Snowflakes slowly falling from the sky floating in the air on your island during this period of snow during the Winter season. To help you find them, you can listen for a subtle twinkling sound that plays when you’re nearby a Snowflake.

It’s random exactly when and where these Snowflakes will fall on your island though, so always be on the look out for one to appear during Winter.

When you do spot a Snowflake falling in the air, simply equip your Net tool and try catching the floating blue flake in the same way that you catch bugs in Animal Crossing: New Horizons! They can be a little trickier to catch than bugs though with how they fall in the air, so it could take some practice to master.

We recommend taking care when aiming for Snowflakes as they have a special mechanic that will make one disappear instantly if you miss with your net twice in a row.

From our experience, finding Snowflakes in the air can be quite common, especially when it’s snowing on your island. Given that you have more than two months to collect them, we wouldn’t worry too much about catching every single Snowflake you spot.

After you’ve caught some Snowflakes, make sure to shoot down plenty of flying balloon presents in the sky across your island for a chance of finding 10 different DIY Crafting Recipes that can use them. There are 26 different Winter Snowflake items to craft in total and we cover all of them later in this guide.

How to Get Large Snowflakes

You can only get Large Snowflakes Large Snowflake in Animal Crossing: New Horizons by finding Snowballs and building a Snowboy. When you create a Perfect Snowboy, the friendly snowman will give you a Large Snowflake and a crafting recipe.

Each day for three more days afterwards until melting, a Perfect Snowman will give you an extra Large Snowflake. That means you can get a total of four Large Snowflakes from each Snowboy you perfectly create if you talk to them every day.

Once you’ve gotten your hands on some Large Snowflakes, there are additional Winter items that can only be crafted using the material. These 16 different DIY Crafting Recipes can be exclusively unlocked by building Perfect Snowboys and cannot be found in flying balloon presents.

Snowfake & Large Snowflake Sell Price at Nook’s Cranny

Snowflakes Snowflake can be sold for 200 Bells and Large Snowflakes Large Snowflake can be sold for 2500 Bells to Timmy & Tommy at Nook’s Cranny. Regular Snowflakes can be found plentifully throughout the winter season and can be sold without concern, but you may want to hang onto your Large Snowflakes as they are far more rare.

How to Get & Learn Winter Snowflake & Snowboy DIY Recipes

There are three ways you can find and get new Winter Snowflake DIY Crafting Recipes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, with a mixture of luck and hard work.

Morning Isabelle Announcement

Near the beginning of the Winter Snow Season on December 11th in the Northern Hemisphere and June 11th in the Southern Hemisphere, you should hear from Isabelle or Tom Nook in the morning announcements about the new Snowflake crafting materials and recipes. If you haven’t already learned the Snowflake Wreath DIY Crafting Recipe, they’ll send it to your NookPhone during the announcements.

It’s worth noting that these seasonal announcements can sometimes be delayed if you have another notable event happening on that morning, like a villager moving in or birthday celebration. So you may need to wait an extra few days until you have nothing else going on.

Keep in mind that the Snowflake Wreath can also be unlocked through Balloon Presents like everything else too — it’s not exclusive to Isabelle or Tom Nook, but rather a shortcut.

Flying Balloon Presents

During the Winter Snow Season, all Balloon Presents flying in the sky over your island have a chance of dropping one of eight Winter Snowflake DIY Crafting recipes! Specifically, this includes the eight recipes that only use regular Snowflakes and not require Large Snowflakes.

Unfortunately, there’s no concrete way to control exactly what you’ll get from balloon presents, so you’ll need to just keep shooting them down until you get lucky. Duplicate crafting recipes are easily possible too and should be expected, so we recommend trying to make trades with friends to complete the collection faster. You may be able to sell any duplicates for a hefty amount online too.

We do have some general tips for how you can most effectively hunt and farm balloon presents though by taking advantage of a few specific mechanics. And for the laziest farming method, check out our Farm DIY Recipe Balloons Easy Using Jail Bars Wall Trick guide here!

New Balloons can spawn every 5 minutes at times ending in a ‘4’ or ‘9’. For example, a balloon could appear at 4:19pm or 4:24pm. By the time it actually reaches your beach though, the time will likely be closer to 4:20pm or 4:45pm.

A Balloon won’t always spawn on these minutes — it’s a random chance as to whether one will actually appear every time. Expect some spawn times to be duds with nothing to see.

The wind direction that Balloons fly in from changes throughout the day. Once you spot the direction that one Balloon flies into your island from, you can expect all Balloons to come from that side for quite some time. Then around 6pm-7pm in the evening, the direction will flip to the opposite.

Walk up and down your beach around spawn time. Now that you have an idea of the current wind direction and when Balloons can spawn, it’s possible to find them with relative ease by pacing up and down the side of your beach where the wind is blowing from when it’s near the possible spawn times ending in ‘4’ and ‘9’.

Turn up your volume and listen carefully. When a Balloon is flying nearby you, a relatively obvious wind sound plays to let you know. This is great when multitasking.

Building Perfect Snowboys With Snowballs

While 10 of the Winter Snowflake crafting recipes can be found through flying Balloon Presents in the sky, the other 16 remaining recipes that use Large Snowflakes can only be obtained from Perfect Snowboys.

Every day during the Winter Snow Season (Northern Hemisphere: December 11th to February 24th, Southern Hemisphere: June 11th to August 24th) in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, two small snowballs appear in a random location on your island. By pushing these snowballs around in the snow, they can grow and form together into a Snowboy when pushed into each other.

If you grow the two snowballs into perfectly proportioned sizes for head and body, pushing them together will build a Perfect Snowboy that rewards one of the 15 different Snowboy DIY Crafing Recipes and a Large Snowflake crafting material. For each of the three days afterwards before melting, you can get another Large Snowflake by talking to him.
