Animal Crossing: New Leaf is the first Nintendo 3DS game to pass 2 million sold in Japan

8 years ago 31 Comments

Big congratulations to Animal Crossing: New Leaf. You’re the first Nintendo 3DS game to pass 2 million copies sold in Japan according to Famitsu! It’s kind of ridiculous how fast New Leaf sold compared to other 3DS titles, just look at the animated graph above. (New Leaf is the big blue spike at the end!)

Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land are close to hitting the 2 million mark but that’s over the span of 14 months while New Leaf has reached this mark in less than 2 months. Very impressive indeed.

There’s certainly no danger of the Animal Crossing franchise coming to an end any time soon based on these massive sales. Animal Crossing for the Wii U anybody?!?!

Iwata apologizes for Animal Crossing: New Leaf out-of-stock situation due to modified 3DS game cart

8 years ago 61 Comments

Nintendo has released a short video with Iwata apologizing for the out-of-stock situation in Japan currently for Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Some have been wondering why this is even a problem since it shouldn’t be difficult to produce more standard game carts.

According to Iwata, Animal Crossing: New Leaf uses a modified 3DS game cart which offers additional save data storage compared to the traditional 3DS game cart. The reason for this is due to the nature of the game saving more items, houses and such data.

Unfortunately, the supplies for this special type of game cart are limited therefore causing the supply issues for Animal Crossing: New Leaf. In fact, replenishing supplies will apparently take several months so it’s unlikely the stock situation will be going away any time soon.

This may also have an effect on the timing of the western release of the game… If Nintendo can’t even supply enough copies for Japan, how are they going to supply North America and Europe any time soon? Feel free to speculate in the comments below!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf tops Japanese sales charts for the third week in a row

8 years ago 15 Comments

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is continuing to print money as it sold yet another 237,823 retail copies last week (November 19th to 25th) in Japan according to Famitsu’s numbers. This marks the third week in a row where the game has topped the sales charts at #1.

Adding to our total from the last sales post, we can assume the game has sold at least 1,474,926 copies plus the unaccounted for digital download purchases since November 12th. Nintendo may release more sales information for that in the future but for now we’re clueless besides the 200,000 number released on November 12th.

Finally, some may find it interesting to know that Animal Crossing: New Leaf actually outsold Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (it only launched on the 22nd in Japan) last week.

01./01. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2012.11.08} (¥4.800) – 237.823 / 1.274.926 (-25%)

Animal Crossing: New Leaf continues to sell like crazy in Japan

8 years ago 14 Comments

We reported a few weeks back on the sales of Animal Crossing: New Leaf in Japan based on shipment numbers coming from Iwata. Now, we have some hard retail sales numbers from Famitsu that include download cards sold at retail but not direct download purchases from the eShop.

Famitsu reports 721,786 retail copies sold through November 5th to 11th and 315,317 retail copies sold through November 12th to 18th. The two weeks totalled together gives us 1,037,103 retail copies and download cards sold through November 5th to 18th.

Direct digital purchases from the Nintendo eShop aren’t included in Famitsu’s numbers, however Iwata said 200,000 digital purchases were made as of November 12th. If we include those then Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold at least 1,237,103 copies so far! More recent numbers aren’t public unfortunately.
