Swim In The River & Collide Into Items With New Animal Crossing: New Horizons Glitch (Version 1.10)
Have you ever wanted to swim in the river on your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island or walk your player into certain items like the Cypress Bathtub? You can now, thanks to a newly discovered glitch!
While Animal Crossing players have been able to swim in the ocean thanks to Wet Suits since the Summer 2020 Update, the river has always remained inaccessible from exploration. That’s changed now with a new glitch in Version 1.10 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Though there’s not really much you can do while in the river, it’s fun to explore new parts of the game that you haven’t before, plus you can explore your island’s rivers or lakes while playing online with friends in multiplayer!
Step 1: Find A Small Low Height Item For Tables
To pull off this glitch and make your way into swimming through the river or colliding into an item, you’ll need to find a small 1×1 item that’s close to flat and typically designed for placing on tables.
Some common furniture items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons matching this description that we’ve successfully tested with the glitch include the following:
- Unfinished Puzzle
- Magazine
- Nintendo Switch Lite
- Turkey Day Table Setting
- Yut Nori
If you discover another working item, please share it in the comments below to help everyone out.
Step 2: Place Small Item Near Corner Cliff Edge
The fundamentals behind this glitch is that your character can climb up or down a cliff into this particular type of small item. Rather than being blocked from climbing as you would typically find with most items, you’re able to climb right into it.
For this glitch to occur, the small item needs to be placed right up against the corner edge of a diagonal cliff piece — either at the top of an elevated cliff or at the bottom next to one. You can see an example of each in the screenshot above.
Step 3: Use Ladder To Climb Up Or Down Into Small Item
Once you have one of the compatible small items set up on the edge of a cliff corner, you can simply take your Ladder and climb either downwards into the item from above, or climb upwards into the item from below.
If you’ve done it properly, your character will be able to stand directly on the small item that’s placed on the edge, and you’ll find the movement to be quite glitchy. Now you understand the fundamentals of the glitch, you can use it to do fun things like push yourself into the river or inside of a large item in Animal Crossing: New Horizons!
Step 4: Restrict Nearby Space & Open Menus To Glitch Into Water Or Items
To perform the fun part of this glitch to enter rivers and items, you’ll want to further restrict and confine the space around the small item if you haven’t already. By doing this, your character will have nowhere else to glitch out of the item space, other than towards your intended destination.
Importantly, you’ll often need to make use of opening and closing a menu like the NookPhone with ZL Button in order to fully glitch yourself into water or an item, and out of the small item glitch zone.
This can be kind of finicky at first, but you’ll get the hang of it with enough practice. You might need to experiment with changing the area around your small item as well to ensure you can push into the desired location.
In the sections below, you’ll find a couple example setups that you can copy or modify for your own island and have some fun! You can also watch our handy video walkthrough embedded at the beginning of this article.
Walk & Explore The River Or Lake Example
If you’d like to glitch yourself into the river or lakes on your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you can follow the example above! Create an elevated cliff 2×2 area close to water with one corner turned into a diagonal cliff edge.
Then have another 2×2 area below, intersecting with the cliff edge, where the small item can sit — see the example below with shovel holes to help illustrate the tile layout for you.
Next, carve out a bit of extra water to the right as shown, so that your character has nowhere else to go. Then when you climb down onto the item, try and walk towards the bottom right where water is, and use the ZL Button to glitch yourself into the water!
Collide Into Large Items Like Bathtubs Example
If you’d like to glitch yourself into an item on your island Animal Crossing: New Horizons, such as the Cypress Bathtub, you can follow the example below! Create an elevated cliff area at least 2 by 5 tiles wide; so you have space for the small item, a 2×2 item to collide into, and space to place the items.
Turn one corner of the cliff into a diagonal corner piece, and place your small item on the edge at the top. Then place the larger item you wish to collide into off to the side, being careful to leave a gap similarly sized as the screenshot above.
When you climb up using your ladder into the small item, you should be able to easily collide into the larger item with a combination of moving around towards it and fiddling with the ZL Button to open/close a menu.
After your items and the glitch are working, you can choose to remove some extra cliff that’s only required for initial setup. Or you might want to expand the cliff area, so you can decorate or try larger items like the Outdoor Bath.

How To Leave The Water When Glitching
After you’ve enjoyed a nice walk around your island’s rivers, lakes, or a lovely collusion inside an item… you’ll likely want to escape at some point!
You’ll find that there’s no way to actually properly walk your way out of the water, so here’s your three best options:
Call Rescue Services Via NookPhone: The easiest and least time consuming way of escaping this glitch is to simply call Rescue Services on your NookPhone. Unfortunately, this option will cost you 100 Nook Miles each time, so it might not be ideal if you find yourself using the glitch often.
Save & Quit With Minus Button: It’ll cost you some more time, but you can always just hit the Minus Button on your controller to save and quit. When you return, you’ll be back outside your house as always in Animal Crossing.
Pick Up Item: In the case of colliding into an item and you’re unable to escape by walking, you can simply press the Y Button to pick up the item back into your inventory in many scenarios.
Experiment Around
It’s worth noting that the examples we gave in this article for how to use the glitch are simply our methods we chose to use on our own island. There’s lots of variation in exactly how you can use it on your island, including backwards versions of our methods.
For example, it’s also possible to setup the water glitch so that you are climbing upwards into an area for glitching into a river, rather than climbing downwards. Here’s another example above.
