How To Find & Catch Sea Creatures
Exclusively found deep under the sea in your island’s surrounding ocean, you must go swimming and dive into the water in order to find and catch Sea Creatures. Start by buying a Wet Suit item at Nook’s Cranny to start swimming.
You can spot Sea Creatures in the ocean by looking out for suspicious bubbles floating up from an area while swimming. When you see these bubbles over an area, press the Y button to begin diving deep into the water and quickly swim towards the shadows using the A button.
How To Catch Fast & Difficult Sea Creatures
Some creatures are more difficult to catch than others. While most can be caught by simply diving near the shadow and spamming the A button, there are some faster ones that require more advanced techniques.
To catch speedy and tough Sea Creatures, like the Red King Crab or Gigas Giant Clam, you need to be more strategic about your approach. You can slowly tread water and swim towards these creatures by just using the analog stick without pressing the A button — this lets you get much closer without scaring them away before even starting to dive!
Another tip is to use the ocean’s surrounding net boundaries. When Sea Creatures approach the net, they have to turn around just the same as you do. Use this to your advantage to corner and force them closer to you!
Sea Creature Spawn Requirements
Some Sea Creatures have spawn requirements that prevent them from appearing until you’ve caught enough in total. The most notable are these six rarest and quickest that require you to have caught at least 80 Sea Creatures in total to unlock them:
- Sea Pig
- Gigas Giant Clam
- Vampire Squid
- Red King Crab
- Spider Crab
- Giant Isopod
We’ve omitted these numbers from the list to save space, but it is worth keeping in mind if it’s your first couple hours diving.
Find Pearls In The Ocean While Diving
In addition to Sea Creatures, you can also find the Pearl item in the ocean while diving, which is used in Pascal’s Mermaid Set crafting recipes. While it’s found in the ocean, the Pearl does not technically count as a Sea Creature as it cannot be donated to the Museum or collected in the Critterpedia.
However, the Pearl shouldn’t be overlooked as it is an important crafting material to make Mermaid Set furniture items and can be sold for a hefty 10,000 Bells each! Check out our guide to getting and using Pearls here.
