The Sanrio Villagers & Furniture Of Animal Crossing: Will They Come To New Horizons?

2 weeks ago 2 Comments

The Sanrio Collaboration villagers are some of the most loved Animal Crossing villagers, especially with their special furniture, yet they remain missing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons so far.

Originally introduced with the Welcome Amiibo update for Animal Crossing: New Leaf back in late 2016, the Sanrio villagers are a set of 6 different Animal Crossing characters based on popular Sanrio properties including Hello Kitty, My Melody, Little Twin Stars, and more!

Not only were these Sanrio inspired characters introduced into the game as villagers, but they also received their own special mini-set of Sanrio Amiibo Cards. By scanning a Sanrio character’s card into New Leaf, the corresponding inspired villager could be invited to your town.

Those Sanrio Amiibo Cards were produced in shockingly low quantities too, and weren’t even released in some major regions like North America, making the cards quite rare today since an official re-release has never happened. A complete genuine set can go for hundreds on eBay!

While some of the Sanrio inspired villager designs were particularly loved by fans, the characters themselves aren’t even necessarily the main feature we’re missing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

For many fans, the far more important part of Sanrio in Animal Crossing: New Leaf was the excellent exclusive furniture sets these special villagers brought with them. Many of those furniture items had a more playful and cute aesthetic to them that isn’t found much in New Horizons. Later in this article, we’ll highlight all of the furniture.

Despite all the great features that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has to offer, it’s still missing quite a lot of furniture, so we’d love to see both the Sanrio villagers and their furniture items come in a future update. By the count of VillagerDB, there are 1764 different furniture items in New Leaf, yet only 1086 to be found in New Horizons.

Will Sanrio Ever Come To New Horizons?

So, will the Sanrio villagers and furniture ever come to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in a future update? It’s hard to say for sure, but we believe there’s a few reasons to think it’s a realistic possibility at the very least.

For one, all six of these Sanrio villagers were released in a months long promotional campaign for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp just last year. That development definitely gives us some hope that collaboration between Nintendo and Sanrio is still in the cards, so we shouldn’t just assume it’s an issue of rights holding back these characters.

Not to mention, there are in-game posters available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons for each Sanrio character like the Kiki & Lala Poster that directly references their name, which likely wouldn’t be possible without some form of rights agreement.

Plus, Animal Crossing is far more popular than ever before lately after the blockbuster release of New Horizons this year, so it stands to reason that Sanrio would be particularly interested in working with Nintendo right now.

It’s worth noting that the Sanrio inspired characters weren’t the only collaboration villagers to be cut from New Horizons either — the Splatoon and Zelda themed villagers included in New Leaf’s Welcome Amiibo update were left out too. Obviously, those characters couldn’t have been an issue of rights!

That leads us to believe the Sanrio villagers missing in action was likely simply a case of development priorities where not everything from past games could be included in time for release, just like many other features in Animal Crossing: New Horizons unfortunately.

And as we’ve seen over the past months bringing back past features like Redd’s Art, Leif’s Bushes, and swimming for Sea Creatures, Nintendo seems intent on filling these gaps of missing content with updates.

So we think it’s quite likely that the Sanrio collection of characters and furniture will be returning in Animal Crossing: New Horizons at some point, although it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when as there’s no obvious season tie-ins.
